Slavoj Žižek on Political Correctness

We have added a short talk  by Slavoj Žižek  in the videos section where the Slovenian philosopher develops the case against political correctness, which he considers risks becoming in an expression of Totalitarianism. Along the way, he addresses other recurrent topics in his work  such as racism, cultural differences and other forms of social domination disguised as "cultural sensitivity". The video was made available by Big Think and you might find the transcript here.

"As we continue to drive down the number of new infections and drive up the number of people on treatment, we will get ahead of the pandemic and an AIDS-free generation will be in sight". Hillary Clinton, 2012

Philanthrocapitalism. Self-servicing charity on the name of the impoverished

In recent years a new trend is increasingly gaining hold in international cooperation circles: philanthrocapitalism or the use of market rules and tools to advance such goals as education, public health or water sanitation by individuals like Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and other corporate magnates.
However, there is a growing sense of  concern regarding the potential conflict of interests and moral dilemmas posed by transnational corporations replacing non-for-profit  entities and intergovernmental organizations in alleviating misery and poverty in many cases caused  by the very same economic model where they thrive and profit.
We have selected a piece by in The Jacobin Magazine on an aspect in some ways linked to the philanthrocapitalism which is celebrity activism. Which agenda is serving this kind of activism and who ultimately benefits are some of the issues forcefully tackled by this piece. We have added hyperlinks and context material at the end.

When there is a problem in Africa, who are you going to call? Bob Geldof and Bono repeatedly nominate themselves. But why should anyone’s fate be entrusted to the delusional, creepy, self-parodying rock-star messianism of this pair of rich tax dodgers? What do they have to offer?
The short answer is, they offer us a spectacle. And a spectacle, as Guy Debord argued, is not just a collection of images. It is a social relationship mediated by images. Those who participate in the spectacle get to experience this social relationship in a special way by consuming the images.
The spectacle of Band Aid — a “charity supergroup” responsible for the 1984 festival Live Aid and its hit single, “Do They Know It’s Christmas,” and subsequent events including the 2005 debt campaign Live 8 — is rooted in a colonial relationship to Africa in which, as the political scientist Graham Harrison has shown, “Britishness” is traditionally constructed through campaigns to “save” the continent from blights and disasters. The “feel good” factor derives from the spectacle-positioning of Britain as “doing good” in the world.

Mocadors, pintura, perruques i màscares.

Report on surge of Sexual Violence by Egypt´s security forces under military rule (General el-Sisi’s regime)

We have added some new material in the Reports Section. Exposing State hypocrisy:sexual violence by security forces in Egypt released in May 20th 2015 documents the surge of sexual violence perpetrated by security forces in the country since the military takeover (met with muted or no criticism by western powers/media) of July 2013

The report finds that under the current regime, sexual violence targets all those apprehended by the security forces, indiscriminately and regardless of the context in which they were detained. In addition to opponents of General el-Sisi’s regime, victims include members of NGOs, students, women and those perceived as endangering the moral order.

Based on interviews with victims, lawyers and members of human rights NGOs, the report reveals the involvement of police, National Security Intelligence officers and the military in sexual violence, including rape, sexual assault, rape with objects, electrocution of genitalia, sex-based defamation and blackmail.

We were attacked in a raid led by the chief of the Alexandria Criminal Intelligence (Mabahith)... They made us kneel down with our hands behind our heads. Then they took the young women to one side and frisked us with our faces towards the wall, sexually harassing us and insulting us. I tried to remove the hand of one of the Central Security soldiers from my trousers, so then they beat me with their weapons until I could no longer resist.” K., an activist from an Egyptian human rights NGO.

Such violence is perpetrated on a massive scale by state security forces, making a mockery of government commitments to make combating sexual violence in Egyptian society a priority. Piecemeal and token measures, including partial legislative reforms and the establishment of a unit within the Ministry of Interior dedicated to fighting violence against women, have had little impact on the spread of this epidemic.
