Reports section available again

We have made available again the Reports section, which we count to update weekly with resources distributed through @OnadaExpansiva. We seek to provide in-depth information on those issues addressed in this blog, offering context and background. As usual we will be gathering materials in English, Spanish, French and Catalan.The fact that all the documents (as well as links and tweets) are in a single page may make it difficult to find whatever you are looking for, just scroll down the screen and it will hopefully be there. Right now we have two very different studies in English; on one hand an analysis by Platform London on the vested interests in the so called fight against piracy mainly promoted by Oil companies since 2010 and enthusiastically embraced by western military apparatus with costs and consequences far from the public eye; on the other a report from Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) on the massive use of tear-gas by the Bahrain regime against civilian population, which we also published as a post with updated info.

Revisiting death from above

On July 2011 we started this blog with a post on the first reported use of drones to carry out a selective killing (an euphemism for a summary execution) by the US navy in Somalia. In Targeted killings and "surgical interventions", the automation of death (which we have updated with new material and info distributed through @OnadaExpansiva) we gathered more than a few stories on how unmanned aerial vehicles were gradually becoming the weapon of choice in the so called war on terror, most specially in those areas between Afghanistan and Pakistan (i.e West Waziristan) where Islamic militant groups seemed to hold territory.

Four years later, drones have become a regular feature in the different theaters where the US  and other western countries (notably France and the United Kingdom)  have intervened (surgically, yet another euphemism) or are waging wars by proxy as would be the case in Somalia, Mali or more recently swaths of Syria and Iraq.  Even though criticisms regarding eventual collateral damage (there is nothing collateral in the death of civilians) has grown and serious ethical and moral concerns have been raised the military use of drones shows no signs of abating in the foreseeable future. What is more worrisome, stalled discussions regarding the control of  production and use of fully autonomous weapons (known as killer robots) could spell the next step towards indiscriminate carnage in battlefields and beyond

En cette occasion on récupère un article de Maurice Lemoine paru dans l’édition Janvier 2015 de Le Monde Diplomatique,  recensant deux ouvrages qui prennet per cible d’un côté (Roberto Saviano) les caractéristiques actuelles du trafic de cocaïne et de l’autre (Johann Hari) la perspective historique de la guerre contre les drogues (war on drugs) et son échec. Comme d’ habitude on a ajouté des hyperliens et information supplémentaire d’ autres sources à la fin du texte.

Longtemps « coke » et « ultraviolence » ont eu pour synonyme « Colombie ». Les temps ont changé. Le pays où la drogue déchaîne une folie meurtrière s’appelle aujourd’hui Mexique. L’écrivain et journaliste italien Roberto Saviano, menacé de mort par la Mafia et vivant sous protection policière depuis la publication de Gomorra, y a poursuivi son travail sur le crime organisé.

A rise in pharmaceutical costs which has more to do with pharma companies pricing and business strategies than actual therapeutic impact and is affecting most European countries. With a limited budget, the NHS cannot meet every demand – and new demands keep arising. As accident and emergency departments face unprecedented pressures, despite the relatively mild winter and an emergency cash injection from the Government, they suck resources from other parts of the service which, sooner or later, feel the squeeze. This week it is the turn of the cancer services.

Digna Ochoa  Abogada defensora de los derechos humanos en México, fue integrante del Centro de Derechos Humanos "Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez" (Prodh). Fuente Comite Digna 

 La historia de la película abarca parte de la vida de la abogada y luchadora social Digna Ochoa, desde su primer secuestro, ocurrido en agosto de 1988, hasta su asesinato en  en octubre de 2001. En el largometraje se presentan más de sesenta testimonios, de criminólogos, periodistas (Blanche Petrich y Miguel Ángel Granados Chapa ), defensores de los Derechos Humanos (Emilio Álvarez Icaza), religiosos, policías, activistas sociales, del procurador de justicia del Distrito Federal (Bernardo Bátiz), así como de familiares y amigos de Digna Ochoa, mientras que los actores que intervienen en la cinta dramatizan los hechos de su vida

Puertas giratorias

En el mundo anglosajón se conoce como “puertas giratorias” al fenómeno por el cual se produce una circulación sin obstáculos de altos cargos entre los sectores público y privado. Estos movimientos se producen en un sentido y en otro, es decir, desde las instituciones públicas a las EMPRESAS TRANSNACIONALES y viceversa. Y se están produciendo de forma creciente a nivel local, nacional y supranacional, constituyendo una muestra más de lo difusa que es la línea que separa el poder político y el poder económico.
